We asked Marie B. ABOU SAAB, Doctor of Physiotherapy, to tell us about her recent experience of attending the postural care course delivered by Rachel Wright in collaboration with Sarah Clayton of Simple Stuff Works.

What attracted you to participate in this course?

Firstly, by its very title. For me the  ‘cradle to grave’ aspect was key because delivering outstanding postural care to people is essential at every stage in life.

What was your primary reason for participating in the course?

In my daily practice, I face many issues regarding lying posture and I’ve never had time to work on it because our main concern is always seating. I have practical knowledge of postural care from day-to-day practice (prescribed by orthopaedic consultants), but I’ve never attended such specialised training.

What part of the course did you find most useful?

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole course. All of it was useful to me in my work; the topics are well connected and each part had its individual benefits.

How will this course help you in your future work?

Having undertaken this training, I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge with the team at SESOBEL (in Lebanon), doing more independent research, reading articles and implementing a protocol of care for the lying position as well as promoting postural care for families, caregivers, therapists and doctors.

How would you describe your course trainers?

Rachel is passionate about sharing her own valuable lived experience with her son with others.  I learnt many kind things from her.

Sarah is confident and competent, communicating her ideas in a comprehensive but simple and kind way.

What would you say about this course to others?

In short, this is a very interesting course for promoting awareness regarding postural management. It highlights the importance of communication with parents and caregivers as well as the necessity of teaching and explaining ‘why, what, how’ and respecting their priorities. The videos with subtitles are nice and I like the workbook which is a great way to consolidate knowledge.
